Meet Nevada Barbecue Association Team: Steve's Pig Pikins BBQ

The way everyone starts their BBQ team is always a little different, but all teams have a couple things in common:  1) They have a passion for BBQ and 2) That passion gives them strength to face their fears and challenges head on.

Steve Roy is a perfect example. He's the pitmaster for Steve Pig Pikins BBQ. When he showed up to his first KCBS contest, he found himself cooking next to BBQ Hall of Famer Johnny Trigg.

Some folks would be intimidated competing against the two time Grand Champion of the Jack Daniels World Championship Invitational. But Steve fired up his smokers and gave it his best, which resulted in getting a call in brisket.

That drive continued, and Steve and his teammates Michelle Roy, Larry Roy, Kathy Roy and Ryan Wiechmann continued to get calls.

In 2016, he was named the Nevada Barbecue Association Team of the Year and placed 2nd at the Las Vegas Championship Rib Fest and the Viola's Rib Cookoff, 3rd in Chili at the Downtown Throw Down and 4th in Hog Wild at Pigs for the Kids. In 2017, he placed 1st in Hog Wild at Pigs for the Kids and 4th at the Las Vegas Championship Rib Fest.

Steve started cooking on a Weber One-Touch, and now he cooks on three of them, along with a Traeger Texas. For competitions and catering, he cooks on a homemade offset smoker and his Assassin gravity-fed smoker.

"I love to entertain. It's all about the gathering for me," he said.
